A Cheap 15 Watt Dummy Load

Here is a simple little project.  Everyone needs a dummy load and for QRP it does not have to be expensive.  I have also found this design really handy for connecting an RF probe for voltage measurements.  You simply open the lid, connect to the case for grond and take your measurement.  An RG174 pigtail with alligator clips on one end and a BNC on the other can be used for experimental amplifier circuits.

Here are the parts:

  • 3 - 150 ohm, 5 watt metal oxide resistors (Mouser 286-150-RC )
  • Scrap of single sided PC board
  • Panel mount BNC connector
  • Altoids gum tin (or similar)
  • #4 screw and nut

I ground the end of the lid using a Dremel so it would fit over the BNC connector.  The solder tab for the BNC connector is bent over and soldered to the bottom of the PC board to assure a good low impedence connection.  Of course 3 small holes are needed in the PC board for the resistor leads and a hole for the screw.

And you just gotta love the Altoids look:
